Phang Nga Bay, which is not far
from Phuket is famous for it's fascinatingly beautiful limestone Karst Islands. The
Islands are full of hidden caves and inland lagoons known as "Hongs". The word
"Hong" comes from the Thai and means Room.
The Hongs are only accessible at certain times of the day through tidal
entry. When the tide is high the cave entrance is covered up with water and you can't get
inside and when the tide is low there is not enought water in the caves to paddle through.
You can however walk into the lagoon. |
|
To canoe into these hongs through limestone
caves, the darknes pressing in on you, bats hanging from the roof is an experience
never to be forgotten. You glide silently through the cave and then your through
into this inland lagoon.
We at Phuket Travelers' Net highly recommend to anyone who is
coming to Phuket not to miss out on this trip. |

The Islands have stood for millions of
years, erosion forming these magical landscapes.
Sheer cliffs arising from the ocean floor up 100s of meters.
Stalactites, meters long, hanging down in front of cave entrances. This is the same
landscape seen in the James Bond movie "The man with the Golden Gun". |
|
The hongs have been known by Thai fishermen
for hundreds of years, but they were left unexplored because of the evil spirits that
inhabited them.
Amazingly, these isolated places are inhabited not only by spirits, but
also by a galapagonian variety of flora and fauna. Bats, rare birds, sea eagles,
turtles. fish, crabs and even wild monkeys live here! |

|
To Access these unique locations you will
need a specially designed kayak. The 5-m long deflatable boats are fabricated from ultra
tough materials that allow the boats to pass over needle sharp oyster beds.
A days sea canoeing including drinks and lunch will cost you around 2700 Baht which is a very good price for what your about
to experience. |
