Located just outside of
Thalang, this temple is one of the least known however most interesting of all of Phukets
Temples. There are a few entertaining "stories" associated with it.
Once upon a time a young boy tied the cow with a leash to a pole, sticking up
from the ground. But the pole was not just a pole. As it turned out, it was the top of the
hairdo from a hidden Buddha statue, buried in the ground.
Efforts were made to unearth the old statue. But the buried Buddha has
resisted any efforts to be dug up.
Anyone who
seriously tried to bring the whole of the statue into the sun was punished.
This also happened to a group of Burmesian soldiers who were trying to
rob Thalang a couple of hundred years ago.
They were stung and driven away by an especially vicious Swarm of
hornets.
This event is a famous legend from the Thai Burmesian war. One can see a
painting of this occasion - and many others - in the wonderfully decorated vina of Wat
Phrang Nang Sahn, only one kilometer from Wat Phra Tong.

The temple grounds of Wat Phra Tong are well worth exploring. At the
entrance on the right, are the dwellings of the monks. Just beside them you will find 5
haubitzers from the Thai-Burmesian wars and a drifting mine from WW2 adding to the
thrills.
A
wonderfully odd museum houses peculiar items from Buddha knows where.
No Western mind will ever know, which system has been at work here.
Finally, Wat Phra Tong has the only Indian Bottlefruit tree on Phuket.
Its all-seasonal fruits look like green bowling balls.
