The Thai Script dates back to stone inscriptions of the 13th century and is written from left to right, as in English. The marked difference, however, is the absence of spaces between words, so that words are joined together in one long phrase.

There are 44 consonants in the Thai script and 48 different vowels producing sounds not usually found in Western languages. Vowels take one of four possible positions in relation to the consonant; they can appear to its right, its left, above it or below it. Some of the more complex "vowel clusters" are made up of two or three components surrounding the vowel on two or three sides. There are no punctuation marks in teh Thai script, although spaces are left between the end of one sentence and the beginning of the next. There are no capital letters either.

In Thai there is no exact word meaning yes or no. Instead, to a affirm something the polite word is used; a man would say krap and a woman ka.

In the following phrases the man would refer to himself as pom, a female would say di chan.
