Sacred Symbols in Thailand

The most well known sacred symbol in Thailand, as well as other Buddhist countries, is the Buddha image. These images do not represent any god and are only supposed to help people attain "Buddha Nature" which is the complete elimination of suffering. It should be obvious that these images should be treated with nothing but respect. To the average Thai, a Buddha image is not the object of merchandise. Mistreating the Buddha image in Thailand is like walking in to a strict Catholic home and turning the crucifix upside down.

The King

Next to the Buddha and the monks, His Majesty the King is treated with nothing but the respect. Pictures of His Majesty the King and the Royal Family are shown everywhere. Every Thai banknote and coin carry a picture of His Majesty the King. Under no circumstances should you put Thai money in your shoes.

Books and Hats

Several objects in everyday life are not as sacred as the Buddha or the King but are still treated with respect. This include books and hats. Why are books sacred then? Well, until not so long ago all education was held in the Wats and most of the books present were containing sacred scriptures. Hats are treated with respect because of their association with the head. They should be hung up instead of tossed on a chair. Also, when entering a temple, take off your shoes but don not put your hat on your shoes. It can also be pointed out that objects of low status (those who are connected with your feet for instance) should not be put in high places.

Elephants and Umbrellas

Elephants, especially white ones, are associated with royalty and therefor treated with respect. The same goes for umbrellas. Ordinary umbrellas which are used to keep the rain off your head are not sacred but the more decorated and extravagant ones are used to shelter a young man on his way to become a monk and a dead person on his way to cremation.

Rice

Rice holds a very special place in the hierarcy of animals, plants and objects because of the fact that it gives life to the individual as well as the country. Planting and harvesting rice calls for special ceremonies. Rice dropped on the floor is carefully swept up.
